Participation and Consultation in the Ulaanbaatar Dialogue (UBD 2026)

A ROLES delegation visited Mongolia to take part in the 11th Ulaanbaatar Dialogue on Northeast Asian Security (UBD 2026) which was held from June 4–5, 2026, in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. 

Prof. Yoko Iwama,  Director of Strategic Studies Program, National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS),
head of the ROLES delegation, delivered a speech on the Session One "Security Challenges and Opportunities for Peace in Northeast Asia." Dr. Shu Uchida, Project Researcher at RCAST delivered a speech on Session 4 "Connectivity Between Northeast and Central Asia." 

Professor Satoshi Ikeuchi of the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Tokyo and Founding chair of ROLES organized the delegation. In conjunction with UBD 2026, he and members of delegation participated in a meeting hosted by NSC-ISS and chaired by Dr. MASHBAT Otgonbayar, Director of the Institute for Strategic Studies (ISS) of the National Security Council of Mongolia, where leading think tanks in Northeast Asian countries were invited and exchanged views and opinions of the regional situation on the global context on June 3. In addition, during the Ulaanbaatar Dialogue, internatl discussions were held with the NSC-ISS and ROLES to explore future directions for cooperation between Japanese and Mongolian think tanks.

The delegation included Prof. Satoru Miyamoto, Professor at Seigakuin University, and Prof. Masaki Nakamura, Professor of Nagoya University of Economics.

ROLES’ Mongolia-related projects are led by the Research Unit “Security Cooperation Mechanisms” (led by Prof. Yoko Iwama) and Research Unit on “Indigenous Logic of the Regions of Eurasia” (led by Prof. Shin Kawashima) in close cooperation with two Kakenhi (Grant-in Aid from JSPS) projects: the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B) project titled “The Formation and Transformation of Historical Perceptions in Russia, China, North Korea, and Mongolia through Interactions within East Asia” (Grant Number 26K00309) led by Prof. Miyamoto as principal investigator and the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B) project “A Study on the Interaction Between Multilateral Diplomacy and Domestic Politics in Mongolia and Central Asian Countries” (Grant Number 26K03181) led by Prof. Nakamura as principal investigator.
