The 2nd Starategic Dialogue Retreat in Putrajaya

The Open Laboratory for Emergence Strategies (ROLES) held “The 2nd Strategic Dialogue Retreat (SDR II)” in Putrajaya, Malaysia from May 20 to 22, 2026 in coorperation with the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) and its Institute of International ASEAN Studies (IIUM-IINTAS). The dialogue retreat, following up the 1st Cyberjaya Strategic Dialogue Retreat, and exclusive to invitees and in the off the record basis. The retreat featured an exchange of views on university-led bilateral cooperation in the occasion of the upcoming high-level visit to Japan from Malaysia, as well as policy discussions on common global challenges such as international conflicts and energy issues. While the conference format is bilateral one mainly attended by Malaysian and Japanese delegation, it partially involved neighboring Southeast Asian countries, particularly from Indonesia. Datuk Prof. Dr. Osman Bakar, Rector of IIUM and Prof. Phar Kim Beng, Director of the IINTAS on the Malaysian side and Prof. Ayame Suzuki, Faculty of Law and Politics of Rikkyo University and Prof. Shin Kawashima, Professor at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of the University of Tokyo and Prof. Satoshi Ikeuchi, Professor of Religion and Global Security of the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST) of the University of Tokyo and Founding Chair of ROLES led planning and organization of the conference. Officials from the Malaysian and Japanese governments participated as observers.
