The Cyberview Strategic Dialogue Retreat (SDR) launched

“The 1st Cyberview Strategic Dialogue Retreat,”was held on February 22–23 in Cyberjaya, near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. During the discussions held on February 24 (in-person and partially hybrid), Ayame Suzuki, a professor at Rikkyo University’s Faculty of Law and a ROLES Senior Associate Member co-chaired the dialogue with Datuk Prof. Dr. Osman Bakar, Rector of the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) and Prof. Phar Kim Beng, Director of the Institute of International and ASEAN Studies (IINTAS) at IIUM, while Prof. Shin Kawashima of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tokyo and Satoshi Ikeuchi, Founding Chair of ROLES and Professor of Religion and Global Security of the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST) at the University of Tokyo, participated. Conceived as a platform for experts and practitioners in diplomacy and security from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Japan to discuss pressing issues behind closed doors, the first session of this international conference was co-hosted by IIUM and the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (B) “Reconstructing East Asian International Relations through Area Studies Methods” (Grant Number 25K03360; Principal Investigator: Ayame Suzuki, Professor of the Faculty of Law at Rikkyo University). The meeting was attended by scholars and senior government officials from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Japan. The three countries shared their respective perspectives on foreign policy and security challenges and exchanged views on potential areas for future cooperation.

Prof. Satoshi Ikeuchi is working to establish academic cooperative relationships between RCAST and IIUM and its affiliated research institutes. He cooperated closely with this meeting, which was led by key members of ROLES and pledged ROLES’ intention to financial and in-kind contributions for the development of the Dialogue, particularly in the new fiscal year starging in April 2026 onward.
