[TV Commentary] Koki Shigenoi Comments on the Iran War on NIKKEI NEWS NEXT

Koki Shigenoi, Visiting Member of ROLES, appeared on BS TV Tokyo’s NIKKEI NEWS NEXT, broadcast on March 17, 2026, to provide analysis on the evolving situation surrounding the Iran War.

The program covered a range of issues, including the possibility of a prolonged military confrontation between the United States, Israel, and Iran; Iran’s “selective control” over the Strait of Hormuz and the associated risks to maritime traffic; the implications for energy supply; and the impact on the production activities of Japanese companies.

From the perspectives of Middle Eastern affairs and economic security, Shigenoi explained that the Iran War should be understood not merely as a military conflict, but as a complex crisis with implications for maritime transportation, energy markets, supply chains, and corporate operations. He also discussed the risks posed by mines and terrorism, as well as the role expected of Japanese diplomacy.

Taking into account the strategic constraints facing the United States, Israel, and Iran, Shigenoi noted that whether the war ends quickly or shifts into a protracted war of attrition will be a key question shaping the future of the Middle East and the global economy. He further emphasized the importance of corporate intelligence activities as part of the response required of Japanese companies.
