[Cancelled (April 1): Due to an unexpected schedule change of the speaker, this lecture was cancelled] Despite the accelerated effort in energy transition and diversification of energy resource import sources, Japan remains more than 90% dependent on Middle Eastern oil-producing countries for its oil imports, largely on the contries conprising the Oranization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
While the transition to renewable energy is being explored not only in oil/gas-importing countries like Japan, but in producing and exporting countries of conventional energy resources as well, geopolitical/geoeconomic upheaval and uncertainty in Europe and the Middle East are making us re-evaluate the role played by oil-producing countries in the global economy and energy markets.
How is OPEC responding to the tide of the energy transition? How has been energy market affected by the international political and geopolitical upheavals caused by the war in Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East? How does it access the prospect of the medium- and long-term energy future?
In this open lecture at the University of Tokyo's Komaba Research Campus, Mr. Haitham Al-Ghaith, during the first-ever visit to Japan by an incumbent OPEC Secretary General, will discuss the current situation of the world energy market and look at the future of energy in from the perspective of an oil-exporting country.
