Special Lecture:
Three Perspectives on Arab Politics: Political Science, Religion/Ethics and the Statecraft

The Arab world is undergoing fundamental transformation domestically/internally and regionally/internationally. The order established after World War I, composed of sovereign states, is in some part corroded but consolidated in others. De-escalation, or the easing of tensions, is the call of the times, but deep-seated tensions persist. Some states stand out as leading actors of the region, however, some persistent non-state actors still maintain their presence and refuse to be dismantled.

How can we grasp the Arab politics now? Are there distinctive patterns in the politics of the countries in the Levant, the North Africa and the Gulf? How the politics of the Arab world as a region is formed? What kind of disciplines do we have for a proper understanding of the Arab politics?

Dr. Zayd Eyadat, a leading political scientist and counsellor in the Middle East with the multiple backgrounds of the history of political ideas and the social science research who has taught both in the West and the Middle East both in universities and in more informal circumstances, will explore this fundamental question.

At the concluding lecture of his Japan tour in May 2025, during which he will have made innumerable dialogues and consultations with leaders and officials in Japan on the policy issues of the Middle East affairs, he contemplates on how to hit best balance between theory and practice, and academic analysis and political decision based on his exploration of the intellectual legacy of the Arab civilization where a rich tradition knowledge, examined and transmitted in generations, on how to grasp the man as a political being, philosophically/scientifically, ethically/religiously and by efficacy/statecraft, implementing the theoretical understanding into practice in government.
