Crosstalk between science and design has brought tremendous benefits to human society in innovative ways. At this symposium, the distinguished speakers from Israel share their inspiring projects which blend science, art and design. What kind of culture, spirit, and systems have helped Israel become a technology startup nation? Let’s learn about the structure of Israeli society and academic systems, where many innovative ideas are born every day from the perspective of science and design.

About the Speakers
 
Shlomo Magdassi
Shlomo Magdassi is a professor at the Institute of Chemistry of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is the Director of the Center for Functional and 3D Printing and holds the Enrique Berman Chair in solar energy. His research focuses on materials and their applications in functional inks such as printed electronics, 2D, 3D, and 4D printing. He is the author of over 300 publications, and he is the editor of 4 books. He also has more than 80 inventions and in addition to basic scientific research, he conducts industrial R&D projects with various companies, such as in solar energy, cosmetics, pharmaceutics, digital printing, and printed electronics. Based on his inventions, many commercial activities evolved, which led to various licensing agreements, worldwide sales, and establishing new start-up companies
 
Liat Segal
Liat Segal is a contemporary media artist, fusing together art, science, and technology. Liat holds an MSc in Bioinformatics and Machine Learning from Tel Aviv University and an MSc in Decision Analysis from Minerva Schools KGI, San Francisco. Her artworks have been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide, including the Israel Museum, Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, Museum für Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt, Gwangju Cultural Foundation South Korea, and Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art. Liat is the recipient of the Minister of Culture and Sports Award for Plastic Arts, 2019, Israel.
 
Marine Zorea
Marine Zorea graduated with a psychology BA from Tel Aviv University. She earned her MSc in product design at Kyoto Institute of Technology. She has worked in Japan with companies such as Panasonic, CHANEL, All Nippon Airways, and the design consultancy – softdevice Inc. She is currently researching sonic and haptic interaction design for the future home as part of her PhD studies at the Kyoto Institute of Technology. Her creative process begins with encounters with people, their everyday habits, contextual behaviors, and physical and social environment. Through understanding humans’ shared needs and perceptual patterns, along with an inquiry into their subjective experience and the randomness of reality, she initiates participatory design processes to create with people intelligent objects that exist symbiotically and sustainably in the world.
 
Guy Blander 
Guy Blander is a UX designer and lecturer at the Masters Program at the Bezalel Art and Design Academy, Jerusalem.
 
Naomi Slaney
Naomi Slaney is an artist and creative researcher, currently the project manager at 212Lab in the Bezalel Art and Design Academy, Jerusalem.

“Israel Week @UTokyo Komaba Research Campus” consists of a  series of webinars on the recent trends and developments in Israel and its impact on Japan-Israel relations. The webinars in this framework will cover a broad range of topics, including the recent normalization of relations between Israel and Arab countries,  security risks of digital transformation, policy responses to COVID-19 and the digital healthcare ecosystem, STEM education, Science & Design, and the comparative study of the Abrahamic religions.
 
It aims to provide an international forum for the exchange of ideas and inspiration from researchers and experts across different fields, and to seek opportunities for collaboration among the participants from academia, NPOs, industry, and the public sector. 

“Israel Week @UTokyo Komaba Research Campus” is organized by ROLES (RCAST Open Laboratory for Emergence Strategies) in cooperation with IIS (the Institute for Industrial Science) of the University of Tokyo and supported by the Embassy of Israel in Japan.
