In Western capitals, there has been much hope that Indonesia – Southeast Asia’s largest nation – could be convinced to join a geostrategic “alliance of democracies” against China. This talk explains why Indonesia won’t do so. The reasons range from the country’s traditional belief in non-alignment to the pragmatism of the current leaders, which places economic benefits above ideological affinity with the West.
